Referrals, Middle Men and the Almighty Dollar

I received an email from a local IT Company who was hoping to engage in a “referral program” to trade services. It’s times like these I’m glad I own my own business and make the rules.

Typically a company would love to refer out work in exchange for a fee of some kind. They’re tons of websites that do this for web designers. Everyone’s for sale, everyone’s willing to pay to get a job.

Not me.  One rule: I only recommend people that I think will do a proper job, and I only expect the same in return. I don’t pay for any advertisements. Most of my business finds me by word of mouth and/or by stumbling onto my website(s).

I get calls every day from companies looking to buy work from me or have me outsource stuff etc. Every day. They fill out my contact form, email, call - anything for a dollar. I guess you have earn a living somehow.

To quote Douglas Jewell, “All you have is your word and your work”. Too true Douglas. If you’re a middle man who simply outsources work, you have neither.
